Spreading a little Christmas Cheer...

Evening Poppets! So as you obviously know Christmas is coming! (Eeeeep! And it's November so I'm officially allowed to say that) I don't want to be preachy and say how well off we all are, as I know everyone faces struggles of different sorts but as everyone reading this will have internet access and a phone to check it on, we really are very lucky and there is a lot of people who aren't. So every year I always like to share these fun things to do that can make a huge difference to someone else, I know a lot of you always do wonderful things for charities and other people which makes you absolute stars! But if you've ever fancied doing any of these or remember me posting it previous years and were wondering what the details were here's a rather long post (sorrrrrry) on a few Christmassy charities and how to get involved spreading a little Christmas cheer this year...

First up is a new social action campaign aiming to spread a little festive love to the homeless and rough sleepers on the streets of Birmingham started by a wonderful girl I know, Kerry, Who had this fabulous idea.
Having just got back from San Francisco where there is a huge homeless population which was genuinely heartbreaking to see. I'm so excited that there are people like Kerry who want to make a difference. I know there are people who have the opinion that its their own 'fault' or 'choice' but while I respect other peoples opinions I just can't get my head around that one, if that's the 'better' option for them then how bad were the other options. I can't see many people wanting to live that life if they had a choice. At the end of the day you don't know how or why people are in the situation they are in and I'm glad I can do something for even just one person who may not have a lot else this Christmas. This campaign is so easy to get involved in! Below is a brief description from their Facebook page
(Which you can find here  for more information).

"Taking inspiration from various 'Operation Shoe Box' initiatives, it struck me that shoe boxes are quite tricky to carry around with you if you're homeless, so I'm hoping to try something different.
Remember those drawstring bags you had as a child for P.E. - instead of a shoe box this year choose to fill one of those with small essential and luxury items. Then myself and team of volunteers will distribute the bags to those on the streets. the bags can be reused after the initial items run out, and are easy for people to carry with them."

Such a simple idea that could mean so much to someone this Christmas, not only for the basic essential items they otherwise not have but to know your in someones thoughts. If you and a friend are stuck on what to get each other maybe you could both have a go at making a bag up? A little shopping trip to pick up the items and an hour with a Christmas film on putting them together. Sounds like a fun afternoon to me and you'll make a big difference to someone. Kerry is also hosting a quiz to raise funds for this campaign so check out their Facebook page and if you can't make up a bag maybe pop to the quiz and support them, or even better do both!

Next is the one you may have heard of before from your infant school days! The shoe box appeal... This one I don't think needs too much explaining, you fill a shoe box with toys and other 'treats' for a child in a country that won't be getting anything this Christmas. (You choose if it's for a girl or a boy and pick which age bracket), if you donate online you'll get a code to pop into the box and after Christmas you'll receive an email letting you know what country it ended up in. You only need to watch the videos on their website to see how happy these children are with their gifts! It's amazing to see their sheer enjoyment when the toys would be considered so small by a lot of people (the list of suggested item's includes colouring books, skipping ropes, puzzles, etc)

For more information on what to pack and your local drop off centre see their website here. (Note that the drop off dates close on November 18th in order for them to be organised and shipped so make sure they are dropped to your local shop BEFORE the 18th) this is also a really fun one to do if you have children! You can explain the idea to them and how lucky they are, they can include a note, drawing or Christmas card to the child it's for and even encourage them to think about them on Christmas day to as they'll be unwrapping their shoe box full of pressies!

The next is another Birmingham based charity, but I'm sure they'll be similar across the country. The Birmingham Christmas Shelter's doors are open to the homeless or vulnerable to give them somewhere to stay, access to showers, plenty of meals and a festive atmosphere over the Christmas week. After a session volunteering here you will feel SO differently about the people you pass that are living on the street, everyone is equal at the shelter and everyone is there (and on the streets) for different reasons. The one thing I really noticed.. How polite and grateful the guests at the shelter are. If you want to give up a few hours of your day over the holidays this is a great place to volunteer at, depending where you are placed during your four hour shift you might be manning the tea and coffee snack room, playing board games or karaoke or serving meals in the cafeteria. One year my friend and I spent our shifts washing up in the kitchen and didn't speak to any guests- but it takes a lot of people to make this sort of place work and even these jobs add to making someone's Christmas special, Even if you can just volunteer on one day you'll be helping a great organisation. If your interested in volunteering you HAVE to register and attend an induction meeting where they'll tell you more about the shelter and how it works.. You can do this and find more information here. Best to sign up to this one quickly as you will need to make sure you get a place at induction (once you've had your induction you'll be able to sign up for shifts).

Above is the list of non perishable foods collected by The Trussel Trust and given to people in need.
(The Erdington foodbank as written at the top is the one most local to me).

And last but not least, an idea that everyone could take part in as it costs so little... The Trussel Trust is a charity that has set up food banks across the UK and you'll often find them collecting in local supermarkets- this is actually how I found out about them while popping in to do my Asda shop.
With 13 million people in the UK living below the poverty line, They collect basic non-perishable food (find their shopping list below) which is then distributed to people and families who have been referred to them for 'emergency food' with some of the items on the list costing as little as about 30p if your reading this you can probably afford to donate an item or two (if you want to of course). You can find their collection points and more information (including if you'd like to volunteer either collecting at local super markets or at the food banks on distribution days) online here. This would be a fab idea for work places to get together and take part in! If each colleague could donate one item together it would be a BIG amount! Except if you work on your own like me so if you live locally I'll be collecting for my local (Erdington) food bank until the end of November.

Hopefully one of these might inspire you to spread a little Christmas cheer whether its with your family or workplace in whatever way you can and I promise you the person you help will be SO grateful.
You'll probably never know just how much.

Thanks for reading this one, Sophie x

Zara Autumn Haul...

So as you'll already know if you follow my Instagram, I am pretty much ready for Autumn, I've given up on the Summer now, the mega summery clothes have been packed away and I'm starting to buy pieces that will start off my autumn wardrobe nicely and will hopefully see me through some of winter to. I absolutely love Autumn, its probably my favourite season to dress for, ever since I went to California a few years ago in September I've been obsessed with the season, the clothes, layering outfits but without having to actually dress for the cold. When I think of Autumn I think of an American 'Fall', warm-ish days, bright blue skies and pumpkins! I love it! have I said that enough?

Zara 'Coat with Large Lapels', worn with Free People top, Topshop hat, River island jeans and Asos boots.
you can buy a similar Free People top here and similar boots here

Zara Striped Co Ord Set, Top and Culottes. Worn with Primark heels.

Zara 'Printed Kimono', worn with River Island vest and Jeans, Samantha Wills necklace and Topshop heels.
You can buy similar shoes in black here.

The other amazing thing about Autumn is the shops finally getting rid of the remainder of their sale rails and put out the new season stock! Call me Becky Bloomwood but my heart does beat faster when I see those beautifully organised displays, fresh colours, new textures, and hats! You can never have too many hats.

So when I was just passing the newly re opened Zara in Birmingham a couple of weeks ago I was naturally just drawn in. Now I love Zara but I've never been a huge fan of their website, it just doesn't really click with me and so I find that I don't often browse it but in store is a totally different ball game, I found SO many amazing items I desperately wanted, here's what I ended up walking away with and how I've worn them in the last week (click below images for direct links to buy).

Here are a few items I had to sadly leave behind but I've added to my 'Wish List' you can also shop all of these items from my Blog Shopping Pinterest board here

(Left to Right) Faux Leather Dress £39.99, Jacket with Lapels £49.99, Printed Blouse £39.99.

Enliven Carbon Laser Facial...

So when my customer Sarah first contacted me about a new type of facial I was super excited, I love trying out new treatments, or any treatments actually and a treatment that can 'improve skin tone and texture, lift and hydrate skin and even out pigmentation. Making skin firmer and smoother' sounded worth trying! Although I must admit the word laser did make me slightly uneasy to start with, especially because it would be pointed at my face... I read the Enliven skin care website and checked out their Facebook page (here) and watching a video of the treatment nothing actually seemed scary so I went ahead and a week last Friday went off to have my first Carbon facial.

Within two minutes of meeting Sarah any doubts about the facial had been completely forgotten, she made me feel so at ease, just by being one of those kind of people, you know the kind I mean? where you instantly feel like you know them even if though you've never met before. After having the carbon applied to my face, which just felt the same as a mud pack we sat and chatted away the 10 minutes you wait for it to dry and start its magic. Between sips of tea Sarah happily told me all about the facial I'd be having, how she first discovered the treatment and answered all of my many, MANY random questions.

So I lay down for my facial, putting on those weird uncomfortable goggles I think people wear on the sunbeds and carried on chatting while Sarah started using the laser to shine a burst of light onto my carbon covered face. I'd read on the website that some people describe it as a similar feeling to pins and needles although I really don't know how I'd describe it? You can feel it coming off although it's not pain full at all! (And if it was, I'm a wimp so you'd know about it.) Its not uncomfortable either but there is a strong smell, other than that I really can't describe it, good job I'm not a writer. Anyway it took no time at all and once we were done I wiped off the remaining patches of carbon left behind and straight away I could see my face looked so much brighter. It's not what you'd call a 'relaxing' facial the way other ones are where they put warm towels on your face but your getting a treatment that you couldn't get a friend to do at home with toner and moisturiser like a lot of treatments.

I couldn't get a photo of myself having the facial done but here is Sarah hard at work, and you can find a very chatty, very close, very fast video of mine over on Enliven's instagram.

I'm lucky and don't have particularly bad skin, although it's actually a really great treatment if you do, but what I really noticed was how it just took away any dead skin cells and took my skin back to how it should be. I'm a bit relaxed when it comes to skincare, make up wipes are about as far as it goes, (I know, I know its so bad isn't it) so this made me feel fresh and brighter and just more relaxed without make up, in fact other than mascara I left my skin to be free all weekend because it felt so much better. A week later it still feels lovely and soft to touch. Even my powder foundation has gone on smoother, especially on my forehead. Which is probably a bit gross considering that must be down to dead skin cells and the likes, whoops. If you want to read more and find out the few medical exemptions for the treatment etc you can find those by clicking here.

While I cleaned up my face and carried on stroking it (even tho I was told to try not to- It was really hard not to) Sarah and I got onto the topic of general skin products and how she's covering not just these treatments with her business but she is really interested in skin care, I always think when you use the word 'passionate' it sounds a bit cheesy but it just sums up Sarah telling you about her work, everything she does work wise has a background to it, her own experiences that shes happy to share and once we were talking about make up and lotions and potions I could have listened for hours. I won't get all scientific but for example I'd never heard of SLS (sodium lauryl sulfate) and I won't pretend to know too much about it except that apart from being found in Shampoos and skin products it's also found (in a highier concentration) in floor cleaners and car wash soap. Which really got me thinking, lately it seems everyone is a lot more aware of what they put in our bodies and 'clean eating' but I know nothing about the products I'm putting on my skin, especially my face! And worryingly more expensive products don't actually mean 'better' in this case.
After trying it on the back of my hand and noticing a huge difference in how it had evened out any redness or colour I left with one of Sarah's very own hand mixed Enliven Make Up Primer's, £14 (which contains no SLS) but is a lovely natural (totally vegan) mix of Avocado oil, witch hazel and Aloe Vera to name a few ingredients. The smell is delicious! and I love its mousse like texture so much that its replaced my usual mac primer. If anyone knows of anymore brands that have similar ethics with their products please let me know as I'm really interested in seeing how the ingredients compares with my usual make up bag goodies.

And a BIG Thank You to Sarah for my fabulous facial!

Sarah has kindly offered £20 off to anyone who would like a Carbon facial with her when you quote 'PLP' while booking. For more information and to contact Sarah visit www.enlivenskincare.co.uk

Mermaid Buys & Spectrum Collections Glam Clam Review...

I first saw Spectrum collections 'Glam Clam' on Instagram shared by a friend and I fell in love! I fell hard! within 48 hours I'd justified it as an essential and had ordered one. It arrived within about four days and was packaged beautifully in a box with lilac tissue paper and a hand written thank you note (I love little touches like that).

The zip up faux leather shell shaped case is just adorable and I've tried to keep the brushes in it so far although I'm sure they'll end up in a pot as they get a bit messier but the case will be proudly on display like it is now (It could even be used as a large clutch bag if you wanted to, perfect excuse for mermaid fancy dress!). The Brushes look almost too good to use and at first I didn't want to mess up the fabulous ombre bristles with messy make up. They are just by far the nicest looking brushes I've ever seen, I love the rose gold metal to compliment the turquoise handles and I can't imagine how they could design one better, although they do have other colour ranges these are definitely my favourites! Although Pink, with Orange and Yellow ombre would make a fabulous tropical collection! I don't know why I love those colours together so much, it reminds me of those hard penny sweets? not black jacks, but the same packet and fruity flavoured? what were they called??

Spectrum are proud to labels all their brushes as Vegan and cruelty free which I really love, so I have compared them to my Body Shop brushes as they are also cruelty free. So firstly just looking at the Spectrum brushes they look like they would be expensive even out of the case and the quality looks and feels brilliant. Compared to the body shop brushes (which I have been a fan of for years and use daily) they feel both softer and fuller, and the finish on them is fantastic! They not only feel lovely touching the skin and apply make up really evenly, they are a perfect large size and even the handle shape feels nicer to hold!

Here are the brushes you receive in the 'Glam Clam' (hopefully) matched up correctly, it did take a little working out.
1, Large Domed Powder Brush. 2, Small Angled Blush Brush. 3, Flat Top Buffer Brush.
4, Buffing Concealer Brush. 5, Large Fluffy Shader Brush.

In total you get 10 brushes varying in sizes in the clam shaped case for £59.99. Compared to most good quality make up brushes these are such good value even if you take a couple out that you may not use depending on what make up you wear. If you can't justify replacing all your brushes in one go you can purchase Spectrum brushes separately to with the cheapest being under £5 which really is a bargain for this quality. I've actually ordered a couple of extras in the pink sale ones to whoops.

6, Small Angled Blender Brush. 7, Tall Tapered Blender Brush. 8, Eyeliner Brush.
9, Angled Brow Brush. 10, Lip Liner Brush. (Numbers 8 and 10 could well be the wrong way round).

Since buying the Glam Clam through Spectrum's website here it has since sold out online at the moment, but I've read on their social media that it is still available from Selfridges London and Birmingham.

What can I say about it that I haven't already? It's beauty with a conscious, you can buy knowing no bunnies were hurt making these. Your make up bag can be as pretty as you feel with your make up on, and well with these pastel beauties your basically one step closer to being a mermaid and who doesn't want that!

If that doesn't fill your Mermaid fix here are some other themed buys I've found this month...

Asos 'Save the Mermaids' t-shirt, available in the summer sale at a bargain price here. To make it a more summery vest shape I've simply got the scissors out and left the edges raw so no sewing! If your a little wary of cutting the shape yourself, fold your Asos t-shirt in half, down the centre front and lay a vest that you like the shape of on top. Make sure the shoulders are in the same place on both tops and mark with your Asos t-shirt with chalk, unfold and check it against yourself to make sure you like the shape you've drawn before you cut it. Remember less is more! you can always cut more away so start with less than you think rather than eagerly cutting too much.

As a bra made of shell might be a little toooo much, I've found this gorgeous South Beach bikini to lie about on the beach instead (straight in the California suitcase it goes). I'm so happy this summer these shape bikinis have been around, not particularly great for bigger busts but us smaller ladies have to have some perks and these are especially flattering. I brought this set in the Asos sale here. But you can shop the full South Beach range on their website here

And to finish off these fabulous Anna Lou of London tassels bracelets made from semi precious stones that just scream sunshine and beaches in tropical places to me! They are sold separately but would look amazing mixed together or one with your own collection of bracelets. And there is no better jewellery than turquoise jewellery in my opinion. Available here

Say Yes to the Dress...

Have you ever watched say yes to the dress? Have you ever watched a marathon of it on TLC? Have you ever sat and watched it with your friends and popcorn? If not your missing out and I strongly suggest you do this! If you've no idea what I'm on about here's a brief description of the show..

Set in a HUGE bridal store, Kleinfeld's in New York City, brides come across the country, or quite often from New Jersey for an appointment to find their dream dress from the 2000 ish they have to choose from in store. They usually bring a huge group of way to many people (Aunts, cousins, every single one of their sorority sisters) or a smaller group including an over opinionated mom/best friend who has the opposite taste to them and will hate everything they try on. And in some really weird episodes the Grooms come along to.
Most want to look like a princess but the best brides are the ones with imaginative visions of what they want to look like on their big day.

The selected bridal brunch will look in disgust as the bride comes out in her 'dream dress' (usually a mermaid style or as requested 'with a lot of bling') they will then roam free and start to find dresses that they think the bride should be wearing and through gritted teeth and a fake smile the assistant will politely agree to show the bride despite it being 3 times her budget. It's brilliant, I don't know if I'm selling it to you enough but I could watch it all day! Literally.. I mean I have 82 episodes on the TiVo box.

So when my friend sent me the advertisement for a local bridal shop and hotel hosting an afternoon with Kleinfeld's Fashion Director Randy Fenoli I had heart palpitations. I don't know how I missed out Randy in the description of the show but he makes it! He eases the stressed brides, controls the overbearing mothers and always looks amazingly dapper in his matching tie, pocket square combo. You want him as your best friend. So I'm pretty excited to go and see his presentation, I mean you never know he could pick me to start a UK Kleinfelds, no?

Now that I've written this post I'm not actually sure where I'm going with this I think I'm just a little too excited now I've booked tickets and wanted to spread the word in case you're a fan to, I was going to wait and write a review afterwards but didn't want any of you to miss this! So if you love Randy as much as me I'll see you there! Now to plan my outfit, would a wedding dress be too much? x

If you are interested I'm sure Wedding Belles of Four Oaks who are hosting it won't mind answering any questions about it (sorry if your reading this and do, but I'm sure you won't). You can find details on their facebook page and see here for ticket info & prices.

Orange is the Happiest Colour! Shopping Picks June 2015...

So I'm REALLY trying to kerb my spending lately... no really I am! We're off on holiday to California later in the year and so the planning, booking, saving has started. At the same time that's really hard because all I want to do is buy outfits to wear while I'm there! So this month I think I've actually been really/pretty good. Here are my picks this month, weirdly there's definitely an orange theme going on, but then again, 'Orange is the happiest colour!'

First up is this gorgeous slip dress from Topshop, you can buy it here. I fell in love with this online and picked it up in my local Topshop so I could pick one with a particularly nice layout of the print. One negative for me was how long it was! I'm 5'9" so pretty tall but this was just a really unwearable length (for me), It would have been nice at that length with heels but I wanted to be able to wear it with sandals so after washing it which shrunk it a tiny bit anyway I only had to take off a few inches (check your local dry cleaners for seamstresses who will be able to do things like this professionally). Now I LOVE it! I'm wearing it here with my new River Island sandals and 'Play purse' beaded clutch. (Does anyone remember having these as small purses when you were little? they were so fun I couldn't resist getting one!)

Another absolutely favourite purchase this month is this incredible paisley print blouse from Warehouse, available here. I'm really into shirts and shorts at the moment so this outfit is on the California list. I'm wearing it with another orange purchase, my river island fringed duffle bag, you can buy that here. And the same river island sandals because I never want to take them off. You can buy them here (and I'd recommend you do).

In Topshop I also picked up this rust playsuit (buy it here), its jersey so it's SO comfortable and the top layer has really cute detailing, it looks a little dark in this photo but the colour is really easy to wear with either black or tan. Add sandals and a straw hat and your done! If it's not for you then it's also available in black here, you can't go wrong with a little black playsuit. The shoes I'm wearing are from asos (here) and the bag is from Thailand but there is lots like this on eBay (Accessorize eat your heart out).

Charlotte Tilbury Filmstar Bronze & Glow, The Vintage Vamp...

I'd heard a lot of good things about Charlotte Tilbury make up, seen articles in a few magazine and I follow her on my instagram, so when I was walking through Selfridges in Birmingham and it was nice and quiet I decided to stop and check out the goods.

I was actually heading over to MAC for a new bronzer and I don't know whether it was the beautiful shiny packaging or the really lovely sales lady but in true Becky Bloomwood style I ended up blowing my budget and picking up Charlotte Tilbury Filmstar Bronze and Glow... annnd an eyeshadow pallet. I mean if your going to go over budget you might as well do it in style.

So first up is Charlotte Tilbury Filmstar Bronze and Glow £49 in Selfridges (you can buy it here). I'll start with the packaging... it is GORGEOUS, yes I'm a sucker for things like this and I know it doesn't make any difference to the product inside but it does add a little something and the shiny rose gold compact is perfect, there's a real vintage feel to the outside and a large mirror inside. The powders are labelled with 'sculpt' which is your bronzer, 'to apply to cheek hollows, temples, jawline, sides & tip of nose & blend' and 'highlight' which you apply second to the 'top of cheek bones, centre of nose, bow of lips & brow bone to give you candle lit skin.' Basically by using it its really easy to emphasize your features without having a heavily contoured look, and you can do in a minute. I found you didn't need to put much on (especially of the 'sculpt' and it was a really natural finish. I've since worn it on an evening out and as my over all make up look was darker/heavier its easy to layer up without you looking orange at all. If I were richer it would be my new everyday make up, as it is I'm keeping it for the days when people I know will see my face not just for food shopping and the post office.

Now the Bronze and Glow I could kind of claim I needed, the eyeshadow pallet I did not. But the lovely assistant on the counter looked amazing! her make up was perfect (not really a surprise) and so I asked her what she had on, I now own that. 'The Vintage Vamp' luxury palette £38
(you can buy it here).
Again, the packaging is beautiful! the colours inside are gorgeous! I did find I had to layer them up a bit to get a strong colour but that may be deliberate so that you can have more of a daytime or an evening look. On the back of the palette there is a numbered guide for 'Prime, enhance, pop and smoke'. I think its quite obvious from the colours what goes where but if you don't often wear eyeshadow there is lots of Charlotte Tilbury create the look videos online. I'm keeping it for evenings out as its almost to beautiful to use and I'll continue to use my Urban decay Naked palette for daily use, but I also wanted to mention a really good cheaper alternative to both... The Body Shop Cube Palette, I LOVE these and have used various ones for the last 10 years! seriously.

Charlotte Tilbury 'The Vintage Vamp' palette £38 available here

Charlotte Tilbury 'The Uptown Girl' complete beauty set £165 available here

If your new to Charlotte Tilbury make up she has a quite fabulous system of grouping make up together for a complete 'look', ie 'The Golden Goddess', 'The Vintage Vamp', 'The Uptown Girl' etc, so if you wanted (and had the money) you can buy the complete look knowing all your make up products will complement each other. Sounds like brilliant marketing? It is! but it also makes so much sense, not all colour combinations go together and this way you won't finish your make up, go to put on a random lipstick and kind of ruin it.

Also while paying for my new goodies, the assistant took my details and put me on their system, meaning that for example if I needed to pick up another one of a lipstick I really liked but couldn't for the life of me remember the name then they would. Or as she suggested, if you sent in your boyfriend to buy you a birthday gift they would know which ranges you liked/had and could recommend something that would go. Brilliant Idea!! Except then he would know how much this all cost so maybe not actually...

Another little tip... for £35 (I think, don't hold me to that) you can also have your make up done for a wedding, night out, date night and you then redeem the £35 against products you want to buy! I only found this out afterwards! But MAC also do the same for £30 so it's worth checking if you have a favourite make up brand/counter.

In all not only does Charlotte Tilbury seem like a really nice person with fantastic hair she makes lovely make up to! Hope you've enjoyed my review, Sophie x
